Y5 Science - Friction

Lesson: Science

Class: Year 5 Year: 2021 - 2022

As part of Year 5's science unit, Forces, we explored friction by playing a jelly game! In small groups, we tried to transfer jelly cubes from one paper plate to another using chopsticks. It was very tricky as the jelly kept sticking to the plate (lots of friction). We predicted what would happen when we added oil - lots of children used words like 'slippery' and 'easier to move'. We were correct! The jelly was much easier to move as the oil caused less friction. We then sorted different scenarios into 'lots of friction' or 'not much friction', and decided whether they were useful or not.
