At St John’s CE Primary School, our curriculum is designed to inspire lifelong learning and is anchored by our core motto: "The JOY of the Lord is Your Strength" (Jesus, Others, Yourself). We deliver an ambitious, sequentially structured, and inclusive education that celebrates the unique identity of every child. By blending a rigorous academic foundation with deep spiritual, moral, and social development, we nurture the curiosity, resilience, and confidence pupils need to flourish. Rooted in our strong Christian family ethos, our curriculum ensures that learning is accessible to all, fostering an environment where differences are celebrated and every individual is fully equipped to realise their God-given potential.

Our Intent

Our chosen language at St. John’s is French. Our French curriculum aims to spark a lifelong love for language learning by fostering curiosity about the wider world and diverse cultures. We provide a highly inclusive, communication-first foundation where pupils confidently develop the core skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing through interactive games, songs, and storytelling. By systematically building essential vocabulary and phonics, the curriculum empowers children to express their ideas in a new language, deepens their understanding of English grammar, and enhances their overall literacy. Ultimately, we equip pupils with the foundational linguistic skills, cultural capital, and cognitive adaptability necessary to transition smoothly into secondary education and thrive as global citizens.

Our Implementation

The content of our curriculum is mapped progressively, within the four areas of language; speaking, listening, reading and writing. Although non-statutory, French is introduced in KS1 (mainly through songs and actions), as it allows our children to have a great starting point in learning a language and means our children begin to develop their knowledge, primarily within the areas of speaking and listening. Building on the knowledge accrued within Key Stage 1, reading and writing are progressively taught alongside speaking and listening, throughout Key Stage 2, for 20/30 minutes per week.

We believe that learning a language is vital for children. It impacts hugely on their learning - not only reinforcing their grammatical knowledge of the English language, but developing career aspirations, that are able to span across the world.

Believe you can and you will…
