Physical Education
At St John’s CE Primary School, our curriculum is designed to inspire lifelong learning and is anchored by our core motto: "The JOY of the Lord is Your Strength" (Jesus, Others, Yourself). We deliver an ambitious, sequentially structured, and inclusive education that celebrates the unique identity of every child. By blending a rigorous academic foundation with deep spiritual, moral, and social development, we nurture the curiosity, resilience, and confidence pupils need to flourish. Rooted in our strong Christian family ethos, our curriculum ensures that learning is accessible to all, fostering an environment where differences are celebrated and every individual is fully equipped to realise their God-given potential.
Intent
At St John’s CE Primary School, we aim to inspire every child to fulfil their unique potential through a positive, motivating physical education curriculum. We deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that empower pupils to succeed in both sports and essential life skills. Beyond developing physical competence, our curriculum embeds life-long values of teamwork, collaboration, fairness, and equity. By focusing on both sporting skills and personal discipline, we actively promote the long-term health, fitness, and overall wellbeing of all pupils.
Implementation
PE is taught weekly across EYFS, KS1 and KS2. Teachers utilise The Wirral Scheme of Work to ensure full coverage of a broad, progressive range of activities. Progression begins in EYFS, where pupils develop coordination, control, and gross motor skills (such as jumping, skipping, and climbing) through both discrete lessons and continuous provision.
To ensure vital life-saving skills, KS2 pupils attend a 10-week block of swimming lessons annually at a local pool. This targeted provision ensures all children can swim 25 metres competently, confidently, and in a range of strokes by the end of Year 6, meeting all National Curriculum requirements.
Our structured curriculum gives children the skills to participate successfully in a wide range of activities, including: Netball, Tennis, Tag Rugby, Tri-Golf, Dance, Gymnastics, Multi-skills, Athletics, Hockey, and Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA).
Extracurricular Opportunities are diverse with a rotating schedule of after-school clubs—run by staff and external providers—encouraging children to explore new interests and maintain active lifestyles.
Strong partnerships with Stanley High School provide regular opportunities for pupils to engage in competitive sports throughout the year and we are also active in local football and netball leagues.
Through our high-quality physical education offer, we empower our children to build the physical competence, resilience, and confidence needed to embrace challenges, ensuring:
Believe you can and you will…
