Computing
At St John’s CE Primary School, our curriculum is designed to inspire lifelong learning and is anchored by our core motto: "The JOY of the Lord is Your Strength" (Jesus, Others, Yourself). We deliver an ambitious, sequentially structured, and inclusive education that celebrates the unique identity of every child. By blending a rigorous academic foundation with deep spiritual, moral, and social development, we nurture the curiosity, resilience, and confidence pupils need to flourish. Rooted in our strong Christian family ethos, our curriculum ensures that learning is accessible to all, fostering an environment where differences are celebrated and every individual is fully equipped to realise their God-given potential.
Intent
At St John’s CE Primary School, our Computing curriculum aims to inspire digital curiosity and build technologically capable pupils, deeply rooted in our school motto of JOY (Jesus, Others, Yourself). We intend for our children to become autonomous, resilient, and creative users of technology who understand how to navigate the digital world safely, respectfully, and responsibly. By structuring our curriculum around digital literacy, computer science, and information technology, we ensure all pupils—regardless of background—develop the foundational skills needed for future learning and employment. Central to our intent is a robust focus on online safety, empowering pupils to make positive, moral choices online and to protect the well-being of themselves and others in an increasingly connected world.
Implementation
To deliver this intent, we systematically implement the National Curriculum using Purple Mash as our core, sequentially planned scheme of work from Early Years through to Key Stage 2. Computing lessons are delivered discreetly, while also providing meaningful cross-curricular opportunities for pupils to apply their digital skills in other subjects. Teachers use the Purple Mash framework to deliver clear, scaffolded progression in coding, data handling, and digital creation. Online safety and digital literacy are explicitly taught at the start of every half term and continually reinforced through designated e-safety units, collective worship, and Safer Internet Day initiatives. Progress is systematically monitored through Purple Mash digital portfolios, allowing teachers to showcase pupil success, assess secure understanding, and bridge any knowledge gaps in real time.
By the time children leave St. John’s, we want pupils to have explored and experimented with a range of computing media, skills and stimuli which hopefully inspire them to pursue further opportunities at high school and beyond – vital given the digital age we are living in. Believe you can and you will…
